Starting the Garage Attic Entrance

Today we started the garage attic entrance. After probing around to find the joist we took the plunge and cut through the drywall.  The small hole created allowed us to get the first glimpse of the space above the garage. Overall it’s looking good.  Originally I was concerned that the joists were on 16″centers.  This would mean that I would have to cut a joist and create a frame to put the stair case frame into.  Luckily though, the joists are on 24″centers.  After it cooled down a bit more,I went ahead and cut the footers needed for the stairs’frame, but I think we will wait till tomorrow to actually install them. I took a few pictures from the small hole that I cut in the ceiling to get a lay of the land. I’ve thrown them over into the gallery along with all the other photos.
